Is the Premier League becoming less exciting? Yes, according to Mathys Tel, the French striker currently playing for Tottenham. The young forward did not hold back when discussing England’s top flight.
Tel echoed recent criticism from Liverpool coach Arne Slot, who recently stated that “most of the matches I watch in the Premier League are not, for me, enjoyable to watch.” The French attacker agrees with that assessment.
Mathys Tel criticizes the physical and structured style of English football
“I’ll tell the truth: yes, it’s not really a spectacle,” Tel said during an interview with streamer Zack Nani. “It’s annoying to watch. It’s basically two teams facing each other, each sticking strictly to their own ideas.”
For Tel, Spain’s La Liga offers a far more entertaining style. “There’s less spectacle in England. You don’t see a Vinicius pulling off a sombrero or dribbling past defenders, or a Kylian Mbappé bursting forward with a sudden acceleration. Here it’s more structured—maybe too structured—with clear ideas, especially on set pieces and small details that can make the difference.”
The French forward also criticized the chaos during set pieces. “I told the assistant coach in charge of set pieces: don’t put me on marking duty. It’s a zoo. Everyone is stuck together, pushing each other, falling to the ground, grabbing each other. The goalkeeper can’t even come out or see anything.” Between a game considered overly physical and chaotic set-piece situations, some players are beginning to question the evolution of the English league—and the place of spectacle in today’s Premier League.
