Bayern Munich are facing an unprecedented situation in the goalkeeper position. After the injury of Sven Ulreich, the Bavarian club now has several unavailable goalkeepers and could be forced to field a very young player in the Champions League.
During the draw on Bayer Leverkusen’s pitch, Sven Ulreich had stepped in to replace several absent goalkeepers, including Manuel Neuer. Returning to action after 539 days without playing, the veteran delivered a solid performance with several decisive saves. However, late in the match, the German goalkeeper felt discomfort. Medical examinations carried out in Munich confirmed a severe adductor tear that should keep him sidelined for several weeks.
A wave of injuries hits Bayern Munich
This injury further worsens an already complicated situation for the Bavarian club. Captain Manuel Neuer, 39, is also unavailable due to a calf injury and is not expected to return until after the international break.
Meanwhile, Jonas Urbig, second in the hierarchy, suffered a concussion during the victory in Bergamo. Leon Klanac (18), who is also dealing with a thigh injury, remains doubtful for the coming days.
Faced with this injury crisis, coach Vincent Kompany may be forced to field a highly inexperienced goalkeeper in the Champions League second leg against Atalanta Bergamo. Two young keepers are being considered: Jannis Bärtl (19) and especially Leonard Prescott (16). A member of the U17 national team and regarded as one of the club’s brightest prospects, he could experience a remarkable baptism of fire at the highest level.
