Cardiff Ordered to Pay Nantes in Sala Case

The long-running legal saga surrounding the disappearance of Emiliano Sala has reached its conclusion. The Commercial Court of Nantes has dismissed the claim brought by Cardiff City, which was seeking €122 million in damages from FC Nantes. This strong ruling removes any liability from the French club in a case that has been both sensitive and highly publicized.

To support its claim, Cardiff argued that it had suffered major sporting damage due to the absence of the Argentine striker, who disappeared in January 2019 during the flight that was meant to take him to Wales. The club relied in particular on statistical projections (expected goals, expected points) to claim that it would have had more than a 50% chance of remaining in the Premier League with Sala.

Judges Reject Hypothetical Claims and Clear Nantes

The judges did not accept this line of argument. The court ruled that these projections were too hypothetical and insufficient to establish a direct link between the player’s disappearance and the Welsh club’s relegation.

At the heart of the dispute was the issue of responsibility for the fatal flight. The court made a clear decision: FC Nantes was not the organizer of the trip but was only involved in communications related to the player’s transfer. No evidence was found to establish any fault on the part of the French club in organizing the journey.

Moreover, the court determined that Cardiff could not prove real and certain economic damage, a key condition for obtaining compensation. In addition to having its claim rejected, Cardiff City has been ordered to pay €480,000 to FC Nantes, including €300,000 in damages. This ruling marks a significant legal setback for the Welsh club, which had hoped for record compensation, and brings an end to years of legal battles and tensions between the two sides.
