Christophe Dugarry did not hold back. Annoyed by the growing hype around Rayan Cherki, the former French international sought to put things into perspective regarding the attacking midfielder of the national team.
Zizou is untouchable. A close friend of Zinedine Zidane, Christophe Dugarry becomes heated whenever comparisons are made between the legendary French number 10 and other players.
Strong criticism of Cherki’s media hype
Speaking on RMC about Rayan Cherki, the 1998 World Cup winner was particularly critical of the media attention surrounding the 22-year-old. “What kind of player allows himself to stop when he loses the ball? What kind of player is performing every time he touches the ball?” he said, pointing out a lack of involvement in certain phases of play.
For Christophe Dugarry, Cherki remains a talented player but is still far from standing above the rest. “We all agree he’s a very good player, there’s no doubt. But excuse me, what does he have more than Michael Olise, Désiré Doué, Ousmane Dembélé, Bradley Barcola and many others? Come on!” he insisted. The former striker believes the Frenchman still needs to prove his consistency to establish himself in the long term.
Continuing his remarks, Dugarry also highlighted the player’s current role in the national team. “Today, Cherki will be part of the rotation, and that’s good for France, but nothing more. He needs to show, to prove, to demonstrate…” before concluding with a line that is already sparking reactions: “Oh, Cherki is not Zidane.”
