Gonzalo Higuaín is making headlines again… but far from the pitch. Spotted in the stands, the former Real Madrid striker surprised many with an unrecognizable look, a far cry from the sharp forward of his prime years.

He is enjoying life. Higuaín fully accepts that he is no longer a fit professional footballer. He has a small belly now and is letting himself go a bit. Simply put, he is human. In response to criticism on social media, the Argentine spoke out, calling the reactions “very sad” and pointing out a certain hypocrisy surrounding the image of footballers.

A New Life Away from the Pressure of Professional Football

“It seems that if you’re no longer at your physical peak, you’re no longer treated like a person. People only love players when they look like machines. The moment you become human again, the mockery begins,” he explained.

“I eat what I want, I enjoy my family, I live peacefully.” Higuaín also recalled the constant pressure he faced during his career, dealing with injuries, criticism, and anxiety. Today, he embraces a simpler and calmer life: “I eat what I want, I enjoy my family, I live peacefully. It shouldn’t bother anyone.”

The former Argentine international also criticized the harshness of social media, where conversations about mental health coexist with relentless mockery. “I’m not the same person I was ten years ago, and that’s normal. I’m happy as I am, and a few comments won’t define me,” he concluded. Despite the controversy, “El Pipita” remains a football reference, with memorable spells at Real Madrid, SSC Napoli, and Juventus, before ending his career at Inter Miami CF, now far removed from the intensity of top-level football.
