Real Madrid are already preparing for next season, and several options are being considered for the manager position. The club’s current priority reportedly leads to José Mourinho, who previously coached Los Blancos between 2010 and 2013 and is now said to be the Spanish giants’ number one target.
Is José Mourinho on his way back? The possibility is becoming increasingly serious, but according to El Mundo, Didier Deschamps is also highly rated internally. The France national team manager is reportedly viewed as Real Madrid’s backup plan if the Mourinho deal fails.
Deschamps Seen as a Strong Alternative
Inside the club, Deschamps’ profile is particularly appreciated for his ability to manage squads filled with stars and strong personalities. That quality is considered essential after the many tensions that reportedly emerged in the Madrid dressing room this season.
Didier Deschamps will become available after the next World Cup, making him a credible option for the Santiago Bernabéu. His experience, impressive trophy record, and ability to handle egos with the French national team are seen as major strengths by Real Madrid’s board. Mourinho, meanwhile, would require compensation to Benfica in order to leave his current position.
Luis Figo, however, does not believe Mourinho would be the right choice. “I don’t think Real Madrid need a tough coach,” the former winger warned during the announcement of the partnership between La Liga and Duracell. “You need to understand football well, have common sense, and know the club and its environment. You also need to manage 25 people, 25 egos, and convince them to move in the same direction.”
