Chelsea FC officially has its new manager. Just hours after reports of a full agreement emerged, the London club confirmed on Sunday the arrival of Xabi Alonso on the Blues bench.
Xabi Alonso did not wait long before returning to management. Sacked by Real Madrid a few months ago, he is heading back to the Premier League, this time as a coach. The former Spanish midfielder has signed a four-year contract with Chelsea and will officially begin his duties on July 1.
Xabi Alonso Takes Charge at Chelsea
In the statement released by Chelsea, Xabi Alonso made no secret of his huge ambitions. “Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in the world. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and winning trophies,” explained the Spanish manager.
The former Real Madrid coach arrives in a difficult context, with Chelsea currently sitting 9th in the Premier League standings. Before Alonso officially takes over this summer, Calum McFarlane will continue as interim manager for the final two matches of the season with the objective of qualifying the Blues for European competition.
