Despite a 2-0 defeat against Auxerre on the final day of the Ligue 1 season, Lille secured direct qualification for next season’s Champions League. After the match, Olivier Giroud mainly cast doubt over his future at LOSC.
At 39 years old, French striker Olivier Giroud still seems far from ready to retire. With 11 goals in all competitions this season, Giroud admitted he has thoroughly enjoyed his adventure in northern France.
Giroud Opens the Door to a Lille Extension
Out of contract with Lille, the former France international confirmed that discussions are ongoing regarding a possible extension for next season. “I feel very good here. It’s been a great year, and I’ve really enjoyed working with this group,” Giroud told Ligue 1+ after the game against Auxerre.
The Lille forward clearly did not rule out continuing with LOSC. “When you feel good somewhere, there’s no point looking for greener grass elsewhere. Nothing is decided yet, but we are talking,” Giroud added before ending with a smile: “why not…”
The message has now been sent to Lille’s board: Olivier Giroud is open to staying, but on his own terms.
