After weeks of speculation, José Mourinho is reportedly on the verge of making his grand return to Real Madrid. According to reports from The Athletic, the Portuguese manager has already signed a contract running until 2029, and his arrival is now said to be only a matter of days.
Yes, Mourinho is expected to become Real Madrid’s new head coach. However, securing the “Special One” was far from straightforward. To lure him away from Benfica, Madrid reportedly had to pay a significant fee. While his release clause stood at just €3 million before May 25, the Spanish giants are believed to have agreed to pay as much as €15 million to convince the Portuguese club to let him leave.
Mourinho’s Return to the Bernabéu
Despite Benfica offering him a contract extension, Mourinho reportedly had only one goal in mind: returning to the Santiago Bernabéu. The move could become official immediately after Real Madrid’s presidential elections scheduled for June 7.
Florentino Pérez, widely expected to defeat Enrique Riquelme, should be re-elected without difficulty. If that happens, Mourinho could be unveiled to Madrid supporters the following day. Reports also suggest that the former Real Madrid boss has already begun working behind the scenes on assembling his coaching staff.
The Portuguese manager is said to want a former Real Madrid player on his staff to act as a bridge between the dressing room and the coaching team. With Mourinho potentially back in charge, Real Madrid could be preparing for a major transformation—and given his reputation, plenty of drama and excitement are likely to follow.
