France continues to dominate global football development, and the 2026 World Cup provides another clear example. A significant number of players born in France will not be representing Les Bleus during the tournament.
The French national team consists of 26 players, but France’s influence extends far beyond that. According to the latest statistics, 75 of the 1,248 players set to compete at the 2026 World Cup were born in France but will represent other national teams.
France’s Global Football Influence
This remarkable figure highlights the extraordinary strength of French football development. When adding the players selected for France itself, nearly 100 World Cup participants were born on French soil. That represents around 8% of all players involved in the tournament, a world-leading statistic. African, European, and Caribbean national teams feature numerous players born or trained in France, demonstrating the effectiveness of the country’s academies and the depth of its talent pool.
The 2026 World Cup also reflects the increasingly international nature of modern football. Of the 1,248 selected players, 289 were not born in the country they will represent during the competition, an average of about six players per national team. The most striking example is Curaçao, where 25 of the 26 selected players were born in the Netherlands, illustrating the close ties between the two territories.
France is not exempt from this trend. Three players in Didier Deschamps’ squad were born outside France: Michael Olise in England, Marcus Thuram in Italy, and Brice Samba in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The statistic highlights how international football careers have become while also contributing to the diversity of the teams competing at the World Cup.
