Rayan Cherki caused a stir within the France national team after his ambitious comments following the 2-1 friendly defeat against Ivory Coast.
The 22-year-old attacking midfielder sparked debate when he told TF1 that France would not go to the World Cup “as favorites, but to crush everyone.” His remarks quickly caught the attention of the French coaching staff.
Deschamps Addresses Cherki’s Comments
According to L’Équipe, Didier Deschamps promptly spoke with the player. Keen to avoid any signs of overconfidence ahead of major international tournaments, the France manager reportedly reminded Cherki that such statements could be interpreted differently by supporters and future opponents alike.
Despite rumors of a stern dressing-down, sources close to the national team insist the situation remained completely calm. “There is absolutely no problem between Rayan and Didier Deschamps,” a source close to the squad explained. Cherki’s entourage even denied that any formal meeting took place, describing the exchange as friendly and constructive.
After reviewing the full interview the following day, the French coaching staff reportedly softened its view of the comments. Any initial misunderstanding quickly faded, and the matter is now considered closed within the France camp.
