A major shockwave has hit French football. According to revelations from The Athletic, Nice and Ivory Coast striker Elye Wahi was arrested by French police on May 29 as part of an investigation into alleged match-fixing and suspicious sports betting activity.
The arrest took place several days ago but has only now become public. The 23-year-old forward is suspected of deliberately receiving a yellow card during Nice’s 0-0 draw against Metz in mid-May. Investigators are reportedly examining unusual betting patterns recorded around the world on that specific outcome.
Sports Betting Investigation Intensifies
In a statement provided to the American media outlet, the Marseille prosecutor’s office confirmed the arrest of a Ligue 1 player as part of an investigation into alleged organized fraud, sports corruption, handling of criminal proceeds, and money laundering. After being questioned in police custody, the player was released, but the investigation remains ongoing.
The case has taken on significant proportions, with the French Professional Football League (LFP) also announcing that it has filed a complaint against unknown persons over potential acts of sports corruption and organized fraud.
Currently with the Ivory Coast national team at the 2026 World Cup, Wahi finds himself at the center of a highly sensitive case that could carry serious sporting and legal consequences if the allegations are proven. For now, no formal charges have been announced, and the presumption of innocence remains fully in effect.
