His departure surprised everyone despite Le Havre staying in Ligue 1. A few weeks later, Mathieu Bodmer has finally explained the real reasons behind his resignation. Speaking on After Foot on RMC, Caen’s new sporting director did not hold back and lifted the lid on his relationship with the Mbappé clan.
Mathieu Bodmer has got everything off his chest after leaving Le Havre. According to the former midfielder, several major decisions were made behind his back, especially regarding the academy. “Decisions were made without informing me. It was hidden from me for months,” he explained. A situation he considered incompatible with his values. “I would rather die than break my word,” Bodmer even said, referring to promises made to some young players and their families.
Bodmer Negotiated With Mbappé’s Mother
Contrary to some rumors, Bodmer insists he had not prepared his move to Caen before leaving Le Havre. “I did not leave HAC to go to Caen, I left HAC to leave HAC,” he stressed. Courted by several French and foreign clubs, he says he thought long and hard before choosing the Normandy project.
The return of Nasser Larguet played a key role in his decision. “He is very important in my life as a player and as a man,” Bodmer said. Today, the former Le Havre executive wants to help revive SM Caen and give back to the club that helped him when he was just a young player from Évreux.
Bodmer will now work alongside the club’s owners, including Fayza Lamari, Kylian Mbappé’s mother. Once again, he insists the discussions went beyond money. “When we spoke, we did not talk about money or full powers. We talked about human relationships, the sporting project, relationships with children and social projects. We found common ground on many values, and it clicked.” Determined to rebuild a historic club now in Ligue 3, Mathieu Bodmer now has a clear ambition: put Malherbe back where it belongs and build a project capable of quickly taking the club back toward the top of French football.
