Kylian Mbappé has been one of the standout performers of the 2026 World Cup. With four goals in two matches against Senegal (3-1) and Iraq (3-0), the France captain is leading Les Bleus and continuing to climb the competition’s all-time scoring charts.
Speaking at a press conference, Didier Deschamps had nothing but praise for his star forward. The France manager also dismissed the criticism that has often been directed at the Real Madrid superstar throughout his career.
Deschamps Defends His Captain
“He is very demanding of himself. I had no concerns about Kylian when I saw him on the first day. I’ve heard criticism about him being selfish. That’s not who he is. He’s the captain and a great example for the entire group,” Deschamps insisted, making it clear that he has never doubted his player despite the constant scrutiny surrounding him.
The French coach also highlighted Mbappé’s influence inside the dressing room and his daily commitment. “He scores goals, he fulfills his role as captain. He has a global aura,” Deschamps added while praising his leader’s impact both on and off the pitch.
With 16 World Cup goals to his name, Mbappé now sits just two behind Lionel Messi’s record of 18. And according to Deschamps, this may only be the beginning: “Records are made to be broken. As long as he feels like it, he will keep scoring goals. He can push the record even higher.”
