Lionel Messi scored twice against Austria (2-0) and once again made World Cup history. But after the match, Argentina’s captain preferred to focus on the Albiceleste’s qualification rather than his personal records.
Argentina have qualified largely thanks to Lionel Messi. With this second win in two matches, the world champions officially booked their place in the last 32 of the 2026 World Cup, a performance that fully satisfies the Inter Miami star.
Messi Focuses on Argentina’s Qualification
“I am very happy with this match, it was very important. It was tough, we had to work a lot, and I am happy with the result and the qualification,” the Inter Miami forward told beIN Sports.
At 38, the Argentine continues to stack up records but remains focused on the collective goal. “Now it brings a form of calm for the next match. In a World Cup, every game is intense and balanced,” he recalled.
Already qualified, Argentina will now try to finish the group stage in style in their final meeting against Jordan overnight from Saturday to Sunday.
