The situation is now much clearer for the French national team. Following their 3-0 victory over Iraq and Norway’s 3-2 win against Senegal, Les Bleus have officially secured their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup.
France’s future opponent is almost known — almost. With six points each, France and Norway are guaranteed to finish in the top two spots of Group I. Their final group-stage meeting on Friday in Boston will determine which nation finishes first.
The Crucial Battle for First Place
The equation is simple: the winner will top the group with nine points. If the match ends in a draw, Didier Deschamps’ men will remain first thanks to their superior goal difference (+5 compared to Norway’s +4). In short, France will finish first as long as they avoid defeat.
That top spot could prove extremely valuable. If France wins the group, they will face one of the best third-placed teams from Groups C, D, F, G, or H on June 30 in New York. Potential opponents currently include Sweden or Japan, Scotland, Australia or Paraguay, Iran or New Zealand, and even Cape Verde or Uruguay.
A defeat against Norway, however, would send Les Bleus into the bracket reserved for group runners-up. They could then face Ivory Coast in the Round of 16, followed by a possible clash with Brazil in the next round and England in the quarter-finals. On paper, finishing first appears to be the more favorable scenario. Still, in a World Cup full of surprises, projections remain theoretical and can change quickly. One thing is certain: against Erling Haaland and Norway, Kylian Mbappé and his teammates will have an extra motivation to secure first place.
