Shocking news in French football — Olympique Lyonnais has officially been relegated to Ligue 2, not for sporting reasons, but due to financial instability.
Following a hearing on Tuesday, France’s financial watchdog DNCG confirmed the administrative relegation it initially threatened back in November. Despite finishing 6th in Ligue 1 and reaching the Europa League quarter-finals, Lyon failed to provide sufficient financial guarantees for the 2025–26 season.
A Major Blow for John Textor and OL
Owner John Textor, who had expressed confidence in reversing the decision, has taken a huge hit. The club is expected to appeal.
“As part of its review of club finances for the 2025–2026 season, the DNCG has decided under Article 11 of its regulations: OL – relegation to Ligue 2,” read the official statement.
This decision could shake up Lyon’s entire summer transfer window, destabilize the squad, and significantly alter the Ligue 1 landscape for next season.
