Olympique Lyonnais finally have some breathing space. Afonso Moreira, who arrived just a year ago, is now very close to leaving the Rhône club to join Bayer 04 Leverkusen.
OL are rubbing their hands. Moreira is set to be sold, and for a very good price. The 21-year-old Portuguese winger was spotted in Germany on Wednesday to undergo his medical before signing his contract. Barring a late twist, he will commit to the German club for the next five seasons.
A Major Financial Boost for Lyon
For Lyon, the deal is particularly attractive. Signed from Sporting CP for around €2 million, Moreira is expected to be sold for about €30 million, with potential bonuses and a percentage on a future resale also included.
This huge capital gain comes at the perfect time for Lyon’s finances. The club needs to make significant sales to meet its commitments to the DNCG and UEFA. This transfer therefore represents a major first step in the financial recovery plan put in place by the management.
But this is probably only the beginning. Other departures are expected in the coming weeks to reach the targets set. Meanwhile, OL continue to work on several attacking targets, including Julien Duranville and Kaïl Boudache, as they look to strengthen the squad.
