Olympique de Marseille believed until the very end. Just seconds away, the Phocaeans were perhaps about to finally lift a trophy, their first since the League Cup won on April 14, 2012. But once again, the script turned into a nightmare.
Levelled in stoppage time and then beaten by Paris Saint-Germain on penalties this Thursday in the Trophée des Champions (2-2, 1-4 on penalties), Marseille extended their endless drought. Fourteen years without a single title is a heavy figure for a club that lives for trophies and big occasions, and this new final lost only adds another chapter to a long list of missed opportunities.
Deschamps, the Only Winning Era
To avoid another trophyless season, possibilities still exist, at least in theory. There is the Coupe de France, perhaps Ligue 1… and the Champions League. But given recent history, skepticism inevitably prevails.
The numbers highlighted by Stats du Foot are merciless and perfectly illustrate the contrast: under Didier Deschamps, five finals played and five trophies won; without him, seven finals played and zero trophies lifted. Since the last victory in 2012, OM have piled up lost finals and disappointments without ever breaking through that glass ceiling, and this Trophée des Champions was another chance that slipped away in the final seconds and on a fatal shootout.
Now it remains to be seen whether this squad can bounce back from this new blow, or whether this night will simply be added to the long list of regrets of a club that can no longer finish the job when history is being written.
