In Marseille, meetings with supporters are not unanimously welcomed — and Christophe Dugarry did not hold back his criticism. Despite what was described as a calm atmosphere during the discussion organized Monday at the Commanderie training center, the former world champion remains highly skeptical about this kind of initiative.
After the heavy 3–0 win against Rennes in the French Cup, he voiced his opposition on RMC to meetings involving players, staff, executives, and supporter groups. In his view, the concept may sound positive on paper, but it almost always turns into a pressure session.
Meetings Seen as Pressure Rather Than Dialogue
“The idea seems good at first, but it never stays courteous — it turns into a form of pressure,” said the 1998 world champion on RMC. “I experienced this in Marseille; there were threats.”
“And if you have to wait for this kind of meeting for players to understand what OM represents, that’s even worse. It lacks sincerity, it’s too forced, and it doesn’t change much.” Drawing on personal experience, Dugarry said he went through tense episodes during his time at the club, with exchanges that escalated into threats. For him, relying on supporter summons to remind players what the club stands for sends the wrong message and brings little real sporting value.
