Matvey Safonov is becoming increasingly impossible to leave out of the starting lineup. Once again decisive in Strasbourg, the Russian goalkeeper has shifted the balance of power in the Paris goal. Long seen as the number two choice, he is now emerging as the leading option, putting Lucas Chevalier under heavy pressure.

Against Strasbourg in a tense match, Safonov once again proved crucial by saving Joaquin Panichelli’s penalty. The key stop set Paris on track, with Senny Mayulu opening the scoring moments later. While his rival watched from the sidelines, the Russian confirmed his reputation as a specialist for high-pressure moments.

Safonov is now establishing himself as PSG’s reference point when it comes to penalties. He has saved five of seven attempts this season, including four in the shootout against Flamengo. True to his style, Safonov stayed modest after the match, simply stating that saving penalties is “part of his job.” Luis Enrique was far more enthusiastic, saying: “I’ve had many goalkeepers capable of stopping penalties, but he’s the best I’ve ever had in this area.” The PSG coach has made a strong call in the last two matches.

For Chevalier, the situation is becoming delicate. With the World Cup approaching, losing his club status could weigh heavily. Signed from Lille by Paris Saint-Germain for €55 million including bonuses and given a massive contract, the French international could already be on his way out next summer, which would rank as one of the biggest flops in PSG history.
