In an interview with Marca, Luis Campos looked back on how Kylian Mbappé’s departure from PSG was handled in 2024, despite their long-standing relationship. The sporting advisor explained that he chose to prioritize the club’s interests over personal feelings.

Kylian Mbappé was special to Luis Campos. The two men progressed together at Monaco and then at PSG. But there was no room for emotion when it was time to part ways. The Parisian sporting advisor revealed details about their relationship when Mbappé decided to leave on a free transfer, triggering a shockwave in Paris. “I’ve had a special relationship with Kylian since he was 14 or 15. I won’t forget it and I won’t hide it, but in this case I tried to be as unemotional as possible, I tried to be as rational as possible.”

Protecting the Team Over Individual Stars

Campos insisted on the need to protect the collective: “I always thought about protecting the team and the other players. We couldn’t let the whole club pay for the Kylian situation, as good as Kylian Mbappé is. My concern, as well as that of the coach and the club’s management, was to make the others feel that they are important (…) we had to protect the club and everyone who agreed to join the PSG project.”

The Portuguese executive also highlighted the club’s financial improvement after the departure: “At PSG, we had very great players with very high salaries, but financial fair play made the situation difficult. Today, we have a very good economic position. We have significantly reduced the wage bill, and we are even more competitive because we are changing the philosophy of everyone in Paris and at PSG.”
