“Luis Enrique looks down on people” : PSG Coach Under Heavy Criticism

French journalist Daniel Riolo did not take Luis Enrique’s latest remarks lightly. After PSG’s 4–0 win over Fontenay in the Coupe de France, the Parisian coach said he was happy to go on vacation—especially because it meant not having to talk to the press. That did not sit well with the RMC pundit.

For footballers, vacations mean zero matches, but also zero awkward questions from journalists—and that also pleases Luis Enrique. At his latest press conference, the Spanish PSG coach did not mince his words.

“If I were given the choice, I’d have no problem doing without it. (…) If someone gave me a piece of paper and told me to sign to avoid speaking to the press, even with a 50% pay cut, I would sign—but it’s impossible. Contracts force coaches to speak.”

A deepening rift with the media

Unsurprisingly, journalists took it badly—especially Daniel Riolo. “Since he doesn’t like us, we’re allowed to say we don’t like him either. He doesn’t want to do press conferences? Fine, then he shouldn’t do them. Let him speak only in PSG’s media outlets and pay the fine.”

Riolo then escalated his criticism, accusing Luis Enrique of contempt. “All he wants are yes-men, because he thinks football belongs to him. But no, football doesn’t belong to him, and he doesn’t have to look down on people. (…) He looks down on people, but I don’t like the man. It’s thanks to the media that his salary and his fame are so high.”

Another tense exchange between the Parisian coach and part of the press, reviving the debate over Luis Enrique’s strained relationship with French media. But as long as the Spanish coach keeps winning, everything is fine for him.
