He really is Kylian Mbappé — just not the one people expect. Since the football superstar exploded onto the global stage during the 2018 World Cup, his namesake’s life has been filled with misunderstandings and awkward situations. Like the famous striker, he is of Cameroonian descent, but insists that his parents chose his name long before the footballer became a household name.
Life With Football’s Most Famous Name
One of the most memorable incidents happened during a ticket inspection on the Paris metro. Without a phone battery or a travel pass, the teenager was asked to identify himself. When he answered “Kylian Mbappé,” the inspectors immediately assumed he was joking. Despite his explanations, one of them reportedly became irritated and even threatened to call the police. Proving that you genuinely share the name of a global superstar is not always easy.
Fortunately, his famous name occasionally comes with perks. While booking a table for a date at a Paris restaurant, he made the reservation under his real name. The reaction was immediate. Upon arrival, he was treated like a celebrity, given the best table in the venue and exceptional service throughout the evening. “They treated me like a prince,” he recalled with a laugh.
A football fan since the age of six, he also has to deal with endless jokes whenever he steps onto a pitch. Opposing supporters regularly compare him to the World Cup winner, shouting comments such as, “You’re not as good as him!” Despite the teasing and the absurd situations his name creates, the young man says he would never change it. Instead, he hopes that one day he might finally meet his famous namesake — a photo that would probably leave plenty of people wondering which Kylian Mbappé is the real one.
