Ibrahima Konaté is arriving at Real Madrid, but with no guarantees. The 27-year-old defender is the Merengues’ third summer signing after Bernardo Silva and Marc Cucurella. But despite this smart move by Casa Blanca, nothing suggests Konaté will be handed a place in the starting eleven from the beginning of the season.
Mourinho Wants Fierce Competition in Defense
Real Madrid already have Antonio Rüdiger, Éder Militão, Dean Huijsen and Raul Asencio, while the club’s hierarchy still dreams of signing another world-class centre-back. The names of Josko Gvardiol, Ruben Dias, Alessandro Bastoni and Nico Schlotterbeck are being strongly mentioned in Spain.
In this context, Konaté could find himself at the heart of a huge battle for only two starting places. His status as a free signing could even work against him if Real Madrid bring in a big-money recruit.
One thing is in his favor, however: José Mourinho is a big admirer of the Frenchman. The Portuguese coach approved his arrival and believes he has all the qualities needed to become a leader in Madrid’s defense. But true to his philosophy, the Special One wants total competition. In Madrid, no gifts will be handed out, even to new signings.
