Following the fireworks between Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich (5-4) was clearly no easy task for Atletico Madrid and Arsenal (1-1). Without being poor, this Champions League semi-final second leg logically suffered in comparison to the spectacle delivered the night before.
Thierry Henry fell asleep: Thierry Henry did not enjoy Atletico-Arsenal. The contrast was striking after the already historic clash between PSG and Bayern. “Yesterday, we were on the Moon. Today, we’re back on Earth. Compared to the day before, it was a real sleeping pill,” said the former striker, now a pundit on CBS.
A Stark Contrast With the PSG-Bayern Thriller
In contrast, Henry had been full of praise for the PSG-Bayern showdown. A completely open game, rich in chances and risk-taking, which stood apart from some of the criticism aimed at modern football.
“For the past one or two years, we’ve been complaining that football is boring. This match wasn’t,” he explained on set. “People say teams don’t take risks anymore, that players don’t dribble, and that they play not to lose. This time, it was the complete opposite. If you’re obsessed with defending, you can go crazy… but that doesn’t interest me!”
Fully embracing his enjoyment, Henry added: “We’ve been saying for one or two years that football is boring. This match was not. Putting pure professional analysis aside, I had a great time, and I think everyone else did too.” A statement that perfectly sums up this clash: defensively imperfect, but spectacular and true to the idea of bold, attacking football.
