During the clash against Bayern Munich, PSG adopted a surprising tactical approach to limit Michael Olise’s impact. To do so, the Parisian club relied on an unusual method directly involving their goalkeeper, Matvey Safonov.
Despite a solid performance in goal during Paris’s 1-1 draw with Bayern, Safonov repeatedly sent his clearances straight into touch. On several goal kicks, the ball systematically went out of play on the side occupied by Michael Olise and Konrad Laimer, a detail that hardly seemed accidental.
PSG’s unusual plan to disrupt Bayern’s rhythm
By deliberately forcing throw-ins in that area, PSG could quickly reset their defensive shape and immediately crowd Olise’s zone. This mechanism forced Bayern Munich to restart from deeper positions, significantly reducing the spaces available to the French winger.
Luis Enrique had clearly prepared a precise plan to contain the former Crystal Palace player, who had already looked very dangerous. Whenever Olise received the ball, Nuno Mendes was quickly supported by Fabian Ruiz or Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to create numerical superiority.
Luis Enrique pulled off a brilliant tactical move. He had Safonov deliberately aim every goal-kick out for a Bayern throw-in, specifically on Olise’s side.

PSG therefore accepted deliberately giving up certain possessions in order to better control the opponent’s movement. It was a rare strategy for a team used to short build-up play and ball control, but it proved effective in reducing Michael Olise’s influence. Another demonstration of Luis Enrique’s tactical intelligence.
