Casemiro’s arrival at Inter Miami was supposed to be another spectacular move for David Beckham’s franchise. However, just minutes after the Brazilian midfielder’s transfer was officially announced, Major League Soccer confirmed that it had opened an investigation into a possible case of illegal recruitment.
Casemiro, who was available on a free transfer after the end of his Manchester United contract, has signed a two-year deal with Inter Miami. The Florida club reportedly had to pay around €880,000 to the LA Galaxy to acquire the priority rights required to sign the former Real Madrid player.
MLS Investigates Inter Miami’s Approach
In a statement, MLS said it was examining “an allegation of illegal recruitment involving Inter Miami CF.” The case reportedly concerns the league’s internal “discovery priority” rules. Although Miami and the Galaxy eventually reached an agreement, MLS wants to determine whether Inter Miami approached or negotiated with Casemiro before officially obtaining his rights.

Under the MLS Discovery Process, each franchise can confidentially register foreign-based players it may wish to sign. This gives the club priority if those players later move to the North American league. If another MLS team wants to recruit a player already registered by a rival, it must negotiate compensation or convince the club holding the rights to give up its priority.
Inter Miami has already faced sanctions over MLS regulations. In 2021, the club was fined around €1.7 million for incorrectly reporting Blaise Matuidi’s salary and breaching financial rules. Casemiro still joins a squad led by Lionel Messi, but the 34-year-old’s transfer now remains under scrutiny as the league investigates whether Miami followed every required step.
