The Champions League is about to undergo another major transformation. Sixteen years after UEFA made the historic decision to move the final from Wednesday to Saturday, European football’s governing body has now introduced a brand-new kick-off time: the final will start at 6pm instead of the traditional 9pm.
The unexpected change will inevitably shake up the habits of European supporters, who have been used to iconic late-night Champions League clashes for years. UEFA’s main objective is reportedly to create a more “family-friendly” schedule and make the event accessible to an even wider audience.
A More Family-Friendly Champions League Final
On Canal+’s side, the new schedule does not appear to be causing any concern. Speaking to L’Équipe, the French broadcaster confirmed it is fully prepared to adapt its programming without any major difficulty.
“It’s an unexpected, more family-oriented schedule, and we will adapt to it without constraints,” explained the broadcaster, which is already planning massive coverage around the event.
As with the previous edition, Canal+ will dedicate several hours of live coverage on the day of the final, along with an entire special week focused on the event ahead of the European showdown. The final will also be broadcast free-to-air on M6, which is preparing special programming throughout the day as well.
