OM will not see the second phase of the Champions League. The verdict is clear, and history will remember that Marseille became the first French club to suffer this fate under the competition’s new format.
It is a historic humiliation for Olympique de Marseille. Thrashed in Bruges (0-3), OM finish 25th in the league phase and quite simply become the first French club ever eliminated at this new stage of the Champions League. A complete shipwreck.
A Historic Collapse for Marseille
While Lille had climbed into the top 8 last year, and Paris and Brest had snatched playoff spots, Marseille collapsed completely. This season, only PSG and Monaco will save French honor by going through the playoffs.
For OM, the statistic hurts badly: no Champions League knockout phase since 2012. Thirteen years of European drought, and now a black mark in the club’s history. In Marseille, the Champions League has once again become a nightmare.
