Real Madrid and Benfica meet again for the second leg of their Champions League playoff, in an extremely tense atmosphere. The pressure is mounting ahead of this decisive clash at the Santiago Bernabéu.
During the first leg, won 1-0 by the Madrid side, Vinícius Júnior accused Gianluca Prestianni of making racist remarks. Both camps then traded accusations and insults, with José Mourinho caught in the middle and doing little to ease the growing tension between the two sides.
UEFA on High Alert Before the Decisive Clash
Although UEFA quickly opened an investigation, no verdict is expected in the immediate future, and the Argentine winger is not likely to be suspended for the return leg in Madrid.
According to Cadena SER, UEFA remains on “alert” ahead of the match. The governing body is particularly concerned that the two players might refuse to shake hands during the pre-match protocol, a scene that would damage the image of the competition. Will the players make an effort for the cameras? No one can say before kickoff. Benfica could try to ease tensions by leaving their player on the bench, but knowing Mourinho, that seems unlikely.
