SM Caen, now majority-owned by Kylian Mbappé since 2024 , has entered full turbulence mode. Broken sporting ambitions, internal tensions, a criticised management… and now a massive social plan: sixteen employees have just been laid off, a stark symbol of a club in deep structural crisis.
When Mbappé bought the club through Coalition Capital, the project was bold: a quick return to Ligue 1, a modernised structure, and European ambitions within a few years. Reality, however, turned into a nightmare.
Sporting collapse, internal conflict
Caen crashed immediately in its first season under the new ownership, finishing dead last and dropping to the third division (National). The fall was accompanied by internal friction, accusations of mismanagement, and public criticism, notably from striker Alexandre Mendy, who openly called out the Mbappé entourage.
Far from Ligue 1… and shrinking fast
Relegated and weakened, the club had to drastically cut costs. Despite Fayza Lamari promising a €12 million budget and major investment in youth development, Caen initiated a major redundancy plan (PSE). After two rejections by the labour authorities, it was finally approved, resulting in 16 layoffs across the administrative, marketing and commercial departments.
The club now operates with just 68 employees, and sits mid-table, 10th after 12 matches, nowhere near the expected promotion fight. Mbappé’s project, already shaken on the pitch, is now facing a deep structural crisis off it.
