Manchester City suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat against Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie. However, Pep Guardiola believes the scoreline does not fully reflect the match, even if he acknowledged the impressive performance of the Spanish side.
The City manager felt his team paid dearly for Madrid’s chances. “The result is clear, but we still have 90 minutes left to play. They had three chances in the first half, and it became three goals thanks to their talent,” he explained to Movistar.
Guardiola still believes in a comeback despite the heavy loss
Guardiola also highlighted his players’ struggles in the final third. “We reached their penalty area several times, but the final pass was missing. They defended very well, with great solidarity, staying very deep. And those quick transitions…”
Despite the heavy defeat, the Spanish coach still believes a turnaround is possible in the second leg. “The result is tough. Now it’s time to have dinner, rest, and day by day we will regain our confidence to try to build good momentum before the return leg,” he concluded.
Manchester City will now need a near-perfect performance in the second leg if they hope to overturn the deficit and keep their Champions League ambitions alive.
