Paris Saint-Germain took a major step toward qualification by defeating Chelsea 5-2 at the Parc des Princes in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 clash. Long challenged by opportunistic Blues, Paris ultimately made the difference in the final fifteen minutes thanks to Vitinha and a brace from Kvaratskhelia. The Parisians will therefore head into the return leg with a comfortable three-goal advantage.

Paris had started the match perfectly. Barcola opened the scoring with a powerful strike under the crossbar following a cross from Dembélé and a layoff from João Neves. Just before halftime, Dembélé doubled the lead after a swift attacking transition, finishing with a precise angled shot.

Chelsea, however, never gave up. Malo Gusto first reduced the gap by exploiting space on the right flank, before Enzo Fernandez leveled the score at 2-2 in the second half following a counterattack led by Pedro Neto. At that moment, PSG seemed to be losing momentum.

The turning point came in the final quarter-hour after a huge mistake by goalkeeper Jorgensen while playing out from the back. Barcola blocked the ball, which was recovered by Kvaratskhelia, who set up Vitinha to restore Paris’ lead. Coming off the bench, the Georgian then crushed Chelsea with a superb curling shot for 4-2 before adding a second goal in stoppage time on a counterattack finished after a pass from Hakimi.

After the match, Luis Enrique did not hide his satisfaction while responding to media criticism. Asked about the keys to the victory, the Parisian coach joked: “The keys? We scored three more goals than the opponent.” The Spanish manager also addressed recurring doubts about his team’s physical condition. “Today, nobody talks about physical capacity anymore,” he laughed. “When we lose, people say it’s physical or mental problems. Yesterday it was physical issues, and today we score three goals in the last ten minutes.” He concluded by reminding observers that quick judgments do not always reflect reality, insisting that success is “multifactorial” and dismissing clichés about his young squad.
