Real Madrid won 2–0 away at Villarreal, who were third in La Liga before this matchday. After victories against Levante and Monaco, the Merengue club kept their run going thanks to a brace from Kylian Mbappé. But it was above all the player’s Panenka that got people talking.
Kylian Mbappé has friends at Real Madrid, but he has not made only friends in the media and on social networks. His so-called dictator streak was brought up again. The player opened the scoring after the break before sealing the win with a stoppage-time penalty, converted with a Panenka.
A controversial celebration and a storm of criticism
While celebrating, the Frenchman dedicated his goal to Brahim Diaz, recently unlucky in the AFCON final, telling him “this one’s for you.” The gesture, however, did not win over everyone. On Winamax TV, Walid Acherchour harshly criticized Mbappé’s attitude, judging the dedication clumsy and inappropriate given what his teammate had just been through.
“Honestly, regarding Mbappé, if I really say what I think, I could get into trouble! I honestly found it pathetic. Pathetic in terms of leadership,” said Walid Acherchour on Winamax TV. He compared it to showing off a Ferrari to someone who can’t afford one, or dating a teammate’s ex and then explaining how it should be done.
For the pundit, the Bondy native mainly wants to stay at the center of attention, believing that this moment was “not his story” and that it would have been better to let Brahim Diaz go through this difficult period away from such staging. “Honestly, don’t have friends like that… Brahim lost an Africa Cup of Nations on a Panenka and he does this against Villarreal… Brahim has been at rock bottom for ten days and that’s how he shows his affection? Mbappé wants to be the main character in every movie. But this isn’t your story, Kylian… leave people alone!”
