Tensions are rising fast between Athletic Club and Barcelona — and Nico Williams is right at the center of the storm.
On Thursday, Athletic Bilbao dropped a scathing official statement in response to recent comments made by Barcelona sporting director Deco about their 21-year-old star, who remains under contract until 2027. The Basque club didn’t hold back, slamming Barça’s financial instability and alleged lack of respect for transfer rules.
“Mind your own business means respecting the rules,” the club fired, referring to the Catalan side’s non-compliance with LaLiga’s 1:1 salary registration ratio — something Barça president Joan Laporta publicly acknowledged.
If Barcelona want Nico Williams, they’re going to have to fight for him
Athletic also made it clear: they won’t be pushed around, vowing to defend their player and club “to the very last extreme,” and invoking the backing of LaLiga president Javier Tebas.
In short: if Barcelona want Nico Williams, they’re going to have to fight for him — and play by the rules. San Mamés won’t go down without a battle.
