Legal troubles continue for Joey Barton. The former English midfielder has been charged with assault following an incident that occurred near a golf club in northwest England, not far from Liverpool.
Barton, 43, has once again found himself facing the justice system. According to Merseyside police, the former Marseille player and another man are accused of violently attacking an individual on Sunday. The victim, who suffered serious injuries to the face and body, was taken to hospital and is reported to be in a serious but stable condition.
A New Case Adding to Barton’s Legal Issues
This latest case comes as the former footballer is already involved in several ongoing legal proceedings.
He must notably respond to a defamation complaint filed by former England international Eni Aluko and was recently handed a six-month suspended prison sentence for offensive messages posted on social media. Known for numerous controversies throughout his career, Barton was also found guilty in 2025 of assaulting his partner during an argument.
The former midfielder, who played for Manchester City and QPR, also represented Newcastle, Rangers, Burnley, and Olympique de Marseille during the 2012–2013 season.
