The momentum is worrying for Lille at the start of 2026: just one win, two draws and six defeats in all competitions. On the eve of the Europa League playoff first leg against Red Star Belgrade, Bruno Genesio was questioned about his future.
Would qualification for the round of 16 determine whether he stays? The Lille coach played down the speculation. “Not that I know of,” he replied. “I have no information about that, so I don’t know what’s driving or worrying people.”
Europa League Qualification at the Heart of the Debate
“What concerns me is my staff. In moments like this, we have to close ranks — us and the players of course, but especially the staff — and keep working as we have for the past year and a half, and as we did before. Nothing has changed. I’m the same coach I was six months or a year ago.”
Despite the pressure, Genesio insists he remains focused on what matters most: performances on the pitch. “What matters to me is continuing to lead the team forward, to find solutions to our problems because that’s our job.”
“As for the rest, that’s the nature of the coaching profession. You can be questioned at any time and, so far, it has never happened to me. We’ll see if it does. It would simply be a new experience,” he added with a smile.
