Pep Guardiola Threatens to Resign if Manchester City Does Not Reduce Squad Size.
Pep Guardiola has issued a strong warning to Manchester City, threatening to resign if the club does not reduce the size of its squad over the summer. The head coach is frustrated with having to leave out several first-team players, including Abdukodir Khusanov, Savinho, James McAtee, and Rico Lewis, who were not included in the squad for City’s 3-1 win against Bournemouth on Tuesday.
Guardiola has always preferred working with a smaller group of players and is unhappy with the current situation where many players are left out of matchday squads. The manager expressed his concerns, stating, “I said to the club I don’t want that [a bigger squad]. I don’t want to leave five or six players in the freezer. I don’t want that. I will quit. Make a shorter squad, I will stay.”
“Impossible” to continue if he has to leave players out
Guardiola’s comments reflect the difficulties he’s faced managing a squad with too many players and not enough opportunities for everyone to play. He added that it would be “impossible” for him to continue if he has to leave players out, and that the situation cannot continue next season.
In January, City invested over £200 million to reinforce the squad after a series of injuries to key players. Kevin De Bruyne will be departing at the end of the season when his contract expires, while Jack Grealish’s future at the club remains uncertain, with discussions to take place after the season concludes.
