Kylian Mbappé, signed in the summer of 2024, has been blamed by several observers for Real Madrid’s struggles. But his former coach Carlo Ancelotti clearly rejects that idea.
Carlo Ancelotti has come to the defense of the French star. According to him, the national team striker is not responsible for the team’s collective shortcomings. “Football can change with the smallest detail, and with that, the chemistry changes. It’s not just about the atmosphere, and it’s not simply about replacing Kroos with Mbappé. In the same year, Nacho left, Carvajal got injured and Modric played less,” he explained to Radio Marca.
A Period of Transition for Real Madrid
The Italian coach also emphasized the effects of the squad’s renewal. “The older generation, which created a fantastic atmosphere in the dressing room, is no longer there, and a new generation must take over, bringing character, personality and leadership. That doesn’t happen overnight; it takes time. Mbappé’s arrival coincided with two important departures, those of Kroos and Nacho, which created a different atmosphere,” he noted.
According to him, this transition was inevitable given the many changes within the squad, including arrivals, departures and injuries. Despite this context, Ancelotti pointed out that Mbappé still delivered individually. “Mbappé has been fantastic, scoring around fifty goals, but the team struggled to win trophies because football comes down to small details, and when you change something, it doesn’t always work,” he concluded.
For Carlo Ancelotti, Kylian Mbappé has never been the problem at Real Madrid. Quite the opposite.
