José Mourinho is furious after Benfica’s draw this Monday. The Portuguese coach is ready to offload several players. For the Special One, it’s over: some will have to pack their bags.
Never one to hold back, Mourinho saw tensions rise at Benfica following the 1-1 draw against Casa Pia on Monday. Despite an unbeaten streak, the Lisbon side has likely waved goodbye to the title, now sitting seven points behind FC Porto with only six matches left. A situation that has triggered the manager’s anger, as he openly criticized his squad.
Manager blasts lack of commitment and winning mentality
Staying true to his blunt style, the Portuguese coach did not mince his words after the game. “At this moment, there are certain players I don’t want to see on a pitch again. I simply don’t want them to play anymore,” he said, visibly frustrated by the attitude of some individuals.
He also pointed to deeper issues regarding commitment and mindset within the dressing room. “Some seem disconnected from reality, as if they don’t live for football,” he complained, mentioning heated halftime exchanges aimed at waking his team up.
For Mourinho, everything now comes down to mentality: “There are players hungry to win, and others who seem to take life lightly. It saddens me. They are not bad people or bad professionals, but they severely lack character.” Realistic about the situation, he no longer believes in the title race. Benfica must now focus on securing second place in what promises to be a tense end to the season.
