Didier Deschamps is back in charge. After temporarily leaving the France squad to attend his mother’s funeral in France, the Les Bleus coach rejoined his players on Saturday in the United States. His objective is clear: to prepare France as well as possible for their entry into the knockout stage of the 2026 World Cup.

France Enter the Ruthless Knockout Phase

“There is the axe hanging over you after every match. That should not create tension or anything like that. You have confidence, we are capable. And you have been capable of doing very good things. There are things we can improve, of course! We must feed off that confidence, without having too much of it either because… we are moving forward, and that is very good, but the further we go, the higher we climb the mountain, so the opponents in front of us will be stronger too. Let’s already think about the Swedes. We still have a lot to go and get.”

The message is clear: France must rely on their confidence without becoming overconfident. Didier Deschamps knows his team has shown good things, but he wants to avoid any drop in focus as the World Cup enters its most ruthless stage. Before facing Sweden, France have been warned. The level will rise, the pressure too, and every detail could now matter. For Deschamps, the mountain is only just beginning.
