In Marseille, Habib Beye has wasted no time in making his mark. Among his first major decisions as head coach of Olympique de Marseille was to take the captain’s armband away from Leonardo Balerdi and hand it to Pierre-Emile Højbjerg.
After the dramatic 3-2 comeback win over Lyon, the Senegalese coach moved quickly to clarify his choice. Habib Beye explained that he wanted to “relieve” Balerdi of an additional burden, believing that Højbjerg brings natural leadership and valuable experience within the dressing room. “I would like to keep the discussion I had with Leo regarding the captaincy private. I will explain why I wanted, in a way, to relieve him of that responsibility. I think Pierre-Emile has that experience within the group.”
Habib Beye’s Leadership Vision at Olympique de Marseille
However, he insisted that leadership does not rest on just one man. “What I also want to say is that today we have many captains in this group. I’m thinking of Aguerd, I’m thinking of Aubameyang, I’m thinking of Pavard, who has a lot of experience.”
Beye’s objective is clear: multiple leaders at OM. “What is certain is that the respect between these players allows them to understand that whoever wears the armband is also there to help the teammate next to him. I think Leo showed a magnificent attitude about it; he understood what I told him. His performance proves all the credit he has earned here since arriving in Marseille. He is a very great defender,” emphasized the former Rennes coach. The armband may have changed shoulders, but the respect remains intact. At OM, Beye wants leaders everywhere.
