OM is struggling in the Champions League. Marseille was swept aside by Sporting Portugal. The record is not good for Roberto de Zerbi in the C1.
In Ligue 1, it’s all smiles. In the Champions League, it’s grimaces. Nothing is going well away from home for Roberto De Zerbi. Already defeated at the Santiago-Bernabeu by Real Madrid (1-2), Olympique de Marseille fell again this Wednesday against Sporting Portugal (1-2) during the 3rd matchday of the Champions League.
This setback extends the Italian coach’s dark streak, now at five consecutive away defeats in the C1. And always the same scenario: two goals conceded each time. Whether against Inter (0-2), Sheriff Tiraspol (0-2), Real (1-2), or this Sporting-OM (1-2), De Zerbi simply cannot succeed away from home.
The Marseille coach hopes to quickly return to the fiery Vélodrome, where his team is much more formidable. But to make an impact in Europe, he will need to break this infernal spiral. Because at this rate, the Champions League is turning into a nightmare for OM under De Zerbi.
