Often criticized in France despite his remarkable achievements with the French national team, Didier Deschamps continues to earn the respect of some of football’s biggest names. Following France’s 3-0 victory over Iraq at the 2026 World Cup, Zlatan Ibrahimovic paid a glowing tribute to the Les Bleus manager.
No one is a prophet in their own country, and Deschamps knows that better than most. However, greatness recognizes greatness. The former AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain striker highlighted how difficult it is for elite players to successfully transition into coaching while maintaining success at the highest level.
Ibrahimovic Salutes Deschamps’ Legacy
“There are very few examples of great players becoming great coaches. He has already won a World Cup, lost a World Cup final, won a Nations League, and lost a European Championship final. Managing so many stars in one team is not easy. People think it’s easy because France has so many stars and that all you have to do is put them on the pitch and everything works by itself.”
“But that’s not true. There are so many things behind the scenes that need to be managed and controlled. He has proven he can do it generation after generation. He has always won trophies, and even when he doesn’t, his team is always among the very best. I have enormous respect for him,” the Swedish legend told Fox Sports.
Strong words from Ibrahimovic, who considers Didier Deschamps one of the world’s leading coaches. His praise serves as another reminder of the extraordinary journey of the French manager since taking charge of Les Bleus in 2012.
