Another setback has struck the 2026 World Cup. Just days before their opening match against DR Congo, Portugal saw its preparations severely disrupted by a violent storm in Florida.
Portugal was hit by a major thunderstorm while based in Palm Beach. Roberto Martínez’s squad was forced to halt its schedule at short notice. A planned press conference was canceled, and training sessions were suspended due to dangerous weather conditions.
Portugal’s World Cup Preparations Disrupted
According to several Portuguese media outlets, the players were left stranded inside their team bus while authorities monitored the storm’s development. Heavy rainfall and the risk of lightning even led to the evacuation of the training facility.
The Portuguese Football Federation confirmed the cancellation of several activities, leaving the Seleção facing uncertainty just days before a crucial match in the race for qualification. After similar issues affecting Uruguay, England, and Iran since the start of the tournament, the 2026 World Cup continues to be plagued by unexpected disruptions. It is far from an ideal situation for Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates ahead of their tournament debut.
A thunderstorm is heading toward Portugal’s training headquarters in Palm Beach, and additional training sessions could also be canceled if weather conditions fail to improve.
