Real Madrid have secured their new midfielder. Despite interest from FC Barcelona and Atlético Madrid, Bernardo Silva has chosen Los Blancos. With his contract at Manchester City coming to an end, the Portuguese international is set to join the Spanish giants this summer.
However, one detail has raised eyebrows in Spain. Although the agreement has been fully completed, the official signing will not take place until July. The reason behind the delay has nothing to do with football.
Tax Reasons Behind the Delay
According to reports from El Confidencial, the 31-year-old midfielder and Real Madrid have agreed to postpone the official announcement for a few days due to tax considerations.
Spanish law states that individuals who spend more than 183 days in the country during a fiscal year may be classified as tax residents and become subject to significantly higher taxation. In some cases, the tax rate can reach 45%.
To avoid this situation, Bernardo Silva intends to limit his time in Spain until the current fiscal period ends. By waiting until July to formalize the move, the Portuguese star can substantially reduce his tax burden. The transfer itself is not in doubt, as all parties have already reached a full agreement and Real Madrid consider the deal completely finalized. The only thing left is to wait a few more days before Bernardo Silva is officially unveiled as a new Madrid player.
