In an interview with Canal+, former Belgian international Eden Hazard spoke very openly about his arrival at Real Madrid… and especially about the famous number 7 shirt he inherited after the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo. A choice he actually never wanted.
The story between Eden Hazard and Real Madrid will remain one of the biggest failures in modern football. Signed in 2019 to become the new attacking superstar of Los Blancos after Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit, the former Chelsea genius never managed to establish himself in Madrid, held back by injuries and constant disappointments.
Hazard Reveals the Truth About Madrid’s Number 7
“Heavy to replace Ronaldo? No, in my mind, I wasn’t coming to replace Ronaldo. The media said that. I have a completely different style of play. I wasn’t coming to score 60 or 70 goals per season,” explained Hazard, who insisted he simply wanted to “be Eden” rather than imitate the Portuguese legend.
But the most surprising revelation concerned the number 7 shirt. “At first, I didn’t want the number 7. I wanted Luka Modric’s number 10. I thought he was going to tell me: ‘go ahead, take it,’ but he never gave it to me,” Hazard said while laughing.
An anecdote that almost perfectly sums up his time at Real Madrid: huge expectations, enormous pressure… and ultimately an adventure that never truly took off despite his immense talent. Wearing the number 7 on your back does not guarantee success.
