Luka Modric (39), whose contract is expiring, announced on Thursday that he will be leaving Real Madrid, marking the end of 13 exceptional years at the Spanish club. In an emotional message on social media, the Croatian midfielder revealed that he would play his final match at the Santiago Bernabéu on Saturday against Real Sociedad.
“The moment has come, a moment I never wanted to see arrive,” said Modric, who joined Real Madrid in 2012. “I’ve had the honor of playing for the best club in the world,” adding that he was “very happy” to have experienced unforgettable moments, especially in the Champions League. “We won everything,” he emphasized, expressing his pride and gratitude to his teammates, president Florentino Pérez, and everyone who supported him throughout his journey.
“You’ve Written the History of the Best Club in the World”
Modric, who will leave the club after the Club World Cup, also received a tribute from Kylian Mbappé, his teammate this season. “I was lucky to play and share the locker room with you this season. I saw up close what greatness means… Before being one of the best players of all time, you are a wonderful person,” wrote the French striker on Instagram.
“You’ve written the history of the best club in the world for over a decade, and you’ve won everything. But you’ve won something that has no price: the respect and admiration of the entire world. Thank you for everything, legend,” Mbappé wrote. The PSG fans will surely not taste the mention of “the best club in the world.”
Modric’s departure marks the end of an era for Real Madrid, as a club legend leaves after writing history with his talent and leadership.
