Chelsea coach Liam Rosenior did not look for excuses after his team’s heavy 5–2 defeat to PSG at the Parc des Princes in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16. The English manager instead chose to highlight the quality of the Parisian side.
Chelsea fell to PSG, but Rosenior believes his players matched Paris for much of the game despite the painful scoreline. “We are still happy with our performance. The last 15 to 20 minutes were completely crazy. We were punished by a very good team. When you look at the score, it really hurts,” he admitted.
Rosenior praises PSG’s exceptional squad depth
According to him, Chelsea were even close to turning the match in their favor before the final quarter-hour. “For 75 minutes we were really good. At 2–2 we were close to scoring a third goal, and there was also Pedro’s offside. The fifth goal really hurts as well.”
The London coach also emphasized PSG’s outstanding individual quality and went even further in his comparison. “In the Premier League, you don’t have Dembélé, Doué, Barcola, Kvaratskhelia, Vitinha, João Neves… they have an incredible team,” he said, in a surprising defense considering the English league is widely viewed as the richest in the world.
Despite the heavy defeat, Rosenior wants to focus on the positives. “They are the European champions and that’s also why I’m disappointed, because our performance was really very good until the third goal. I know it’s difficult to say given the final result, but we need to manage difficult moments better.” Chelsea will now need a major feat next Tuesday at Stamford Bridge to overturn PSG and qualify.
